Maths in Early Years
Early mathematical knowledge is an essential foundation stone of every child's educational journey. In Nursery, many children begin by counting by rote, meaning they will able to say the number names in order simply because they have remembered the words and order they go in. From this, children then need to begin to master the five counting principles. These are:
-
The one-to-one principle
-
The stable order principle
-
The cardinal principle
-
The abstraction principle
-
The order-irrelevance principle
In Foundation, we follow the White Rose Hub scheme of learning. We ensure that our lessons inspire confidence in mathematics while meeting all curriculum and early years developmental goals. The scheme covers the DFE statutory framework for the EYFS and Educational Programme for Mathematics and helps to embed mathematical thinking and talk. Additionally, it allows for key concepts to be revisited and developed throughout the year.
There are 18 blocks which provide a variety of opportunities to develop the understanding of number, shape, measure and spatial thinking.
