DT at Rickley Park

Intent

At Rickley Park Primary School, the Design Technology curriculum enables children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products.  They will fulfil a design brief using a range of skills, equipment and materials.  Children develop their understanding of evaluation and the importance of this iterative approach when developing products.

How DT is taught at Rickley Park

Typically, DT is taught as a block over a few days or afternoons rather than once a week as most other subjects are taught.  This is to allow adequate time for the children to develop and complete their designs so they are able to feel they have achieved what they set out to make.

How to support your child at home

Very often initial designs do not work in DT.  This is an important part of the design, make and evaluate process.  It is also a key area for children to learn about developing resilience, perseverance and recognising that things don’t always go to plan first time.  Whenever children are faced with challenges at home, encourage them to think through what has worked and what hasn’t and how things can be changed to make it better in the future.  Allow them to make mistakes and see that as an opportunity to get better and learn before moving on and not dwelling on tricky situations.
